TEAM FROM YORK VICTORIOUS ON THE TALISKER TREK 2007 |
| In the Summer of 2007, nearly 200 people from all over the country pulled on their walking boots to take part in the Talisker Trek on the Isle of Skye, with a team from York becoming the ultimate winners. They were joined by Lewis Gordon Pugh, ‘The Polar Bear’ of artic waters, Tom Avery, the North & South Polar record breaking explorer and Dean Richards and Martin Bayfield, former Lions and England Rugby legends. The Trek was organised by the makers of Talisker, the only single malt whisky to come from the Isle of Skye, to raise money for the Woodland Trust. |

On Friday June 1st, against the rugged backdrop of the Cuillin hills, the trekkers arrived at the Glen Brittle campsite eager to take on the Talisker Trek. They were met by Lewis Gordon Pugh, Tom Avery, Dean Richards and Martin Bayfield who shared this once in a lifetime guided adventure with them. Not only was it a fantastic experience for all involved, but the trekkers are also continuing to raise money for the Woodland Trust to help address the decline in Woodland areas across the UK. Sue Holden of the Woodland Trust says, "The Woodland Trust has created 3,200 hectares of new native woodland but although this is a significant amount, it is not enough. The UK is one of the least wooded countries in Europe with only 8% of the land taken up by woods, compared to the European average of 36%. This is causing a very negative impact on our environment. The money raised by the Talisker Trek will help to replant some of the much needed new trees, and really gives something back to our beautiful countryside."

Over the weekend trekkers worked in teams of four to score points on a number of physical and mental challenges along the trek in an attempt to take home the coveted Talisker Trek Quaich, which was eventually won this year by Ian Foxley, Justin Kent, David Stewart, and Paul McCarter. Activities included a rugby skills challenge set by Martin Bayfield and Dean Richards, and a mental task devised by the Woodland Trust.
The weekend culminated in a final Sunday morning trek to the Talisker Distillery where trekkers were able to immerse themselves in the unique environment of one of the world’s award winning premiere single malt scotch whiskies, followed by an award ceremony before the tired but happy trekkers made their way home. |

Lewis Gordon Pugh said of the experience, "The Talisker Trek has been absolutely fantastic; to spend a weekend on this breathtaking island in such good company has been a pleasure. Everyone has given their all and the fact we have managed to raise such a lot for the Woodland Trust is fantastic. We have all taken part in this Trek to raise money so we can give something back to our great countryside, this will be a weekend I will always remember." |
